Might be. ATYCLB was better than HTDAAB for sure. Haven't listened to HTDAAB for months. I was enthusiastic when it came out, but it has seriously dropped since then.
ATYCLB is way better than HTDAAB , its even bitter that JT *run away*
I like HTDAAB better than ATYCLB. Opens with Vertigo, then Miracle Drug (same as BD, very much alike). then my fav SYCMIOYO. Also got Love + Peace, then COBL (U2's 2nd best song ever so far). All Because of You is a great rocker. A Man and a Woman, not so good. Crumbs is awesome. One Step not so much. Original of the Species.... very great song. Yahweh, pretty good. Fast Cars is cool.
ATYCLB - I only like BD, Stuck In a Moment, Elevation, Walk On, Kite, and When I Look at the World.

I had a realization while listening to Coldplays new album...
It's U2 from start to finish.
It's like listening to War again, with all the poltical stuff. Plus 42 is their rewrite of 40, wouldn't ya say?
Viva la Vida (song) is like Still Havent Found. There's a message beneath and both have somewhat of a religious sense.
Violet Hill is like listening to SBS....more bullocks. Lost is like One Tree Hill....
My point is I'm glad Coldplay respects U2 so much....but perhaps they need to actually be themselves. Because if they do change their sound again, that's only admitting they want to have U2's career.

I think Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends is Coldplay finding their sound, sure you can hear the influences, but honestly, listen to them back to back with U2 and there aren't that many similarities. Both bands have big ambitions, dreams, ideas, and aren't afraid to be big, that is why I think they get tossed around so much as the "next U2". I've been on a big Coldplay kick for the past couple of days, the new album is just leaps and bounds ahead of their other material, definitely their "Unforgettable Fire", just as it seems to be the first major shift

42 doesn't have anything in common with "40" except the 4.
I still haven't found like Viva? Not in my ears. Also the 'meaning' is totally different to me.
Violet Hill goes into the same direction as SBS in it's meaning, but there's a gazillion anti-war songs that deal with critisizing today's society.
Lost like One tree hill? If you search hard enough for similarities you'll find some in every song of every artist...
I would have partly agreed with you on earlier releases, but on Viva, they really found themselves.
So, I guess if they change their sound, they want to have U2's career, if they don't change it, they're boring U2 rip-offs.

Sorry Steve m'man but I really can't see much in the way of similarities, particularly the ones you suggest - I'm more in accordance with Yeah and Jake. I remember Chris Martin saying that "42" was a nod towards "40", but I can't see how. To be fair, who wouldn't want to have U2's career lol? Essentially, I think this was Coldplay realising that they might have been starting to wander too near to the sounds and ways of other bands such as U2 (I mean, I still think that Fix You bears strong similarities to Miracle Drug but anyway), and they actually have stepped away and gone down their own path. Sure, they recruited Brian Eno as producer but he doesn't just help produce U2 music, he has his own style which he's helped apply to other bands, and, to me, is partly why Viva la Vida is such a fresh album to listen to . Coldplay wanted to find themselves and I think they have - they just needed someone to point them in the right direction.
I love Viva la Vida, and it reminds me of U2... specifically, of The Unforgettable Fire. However, it has its own creativity to it (some probably coming from the Latin American influence), and is a Coldplay album, not a U2 album. Just because it has U2-influences doesn't make it 'U2'.
Also, speaking of ATYCLB... it is tied for the honour of 'worst U2 album ever' for me with October.
Also, Violet Hill best compares to TUF (the song) for me, not SBS. I don't hear any of SBS in it, except for the fact that both songs have very good drumming...

In Rolling Stone Chris Martin said that every great band has a song with a number as the title, so that is the only resemblance of "42" to "40", he also mentioned "1979" by the Smashing Pumpkins. It's just a nod to the tradition I guess, why else would it be called 42 unless there is a deeeeeep hidden meaning in that song, which is one of my absolute favorites btw
I bought the album a couple days ago. Lost has a very U2 ish feel too it. Course the onlly reason I bought it was I couln'dt get ahold of GNRs Appetite For Destruction.
